I've been paying close attention to what sports commentators have been saying lately, and I've noticed that I hear them saying (often) that Dwight Howard is frustrated with his team, Orlando Magic because of their team strategy. In Orlando, the team strategy does not include giving him the ball as much as he would like (and probably should be receiving it). There are many times when the Magic victory is on the line, and the team decides that dumping the ball inside the paint to Howard would not be in their best interest. This way of thinking has proven to be a grave error for the team... Because, unlike Shaq, Dwight Howard is a big man that is very good at making free throws... If they were to dump the ball to him, not only is he strong enough to force the goal while being fouled and pick up the "and one," but he is good enough at making free throws that he will turn it into a 3 point play, or at least make both free throws if he missed the shot... I hear rumors that, because D. Howard understands his potential (but not arrogantly, just eagerly wanting to win) and that the team doesn't utilize him the way they should, he is getting very frustrated with being in Orlando. Even Charles Barkley has said it many times on air...
I also read somewhere online (and when I find where I will post it), that it is believed that either the Hawks were interested in Howard, or that a Sports analyst just believed that Howard would be a good fit in Atlanta. That sparked a train of thoughts in my mind, and now I'm here blogging about it to find out if what I was hearing and read were true...
If they are, that would be the greatest thing to happen to Atlanta AND Dwight Howard's NBA career at this point... Just imagine....
To begin with, Dwight Howard is BORN AND RAISED in Atlanta... Nothing like playing for the HOME team and being the very person to bring your born and raised home town to it's FIRST EVER NBA finals title, or even NBA Finals appearance for that matter...
Why do I believe that with Howard, the Hawks would be finals bound? It's simple really...
If anyone has been watching the Hawks, notice that their biggest problem on the floor is that they do not get rebounds... At least not enough. When they take a shot, every Hawk (often) clears the paint giving the other team the easy rebound and cutting themselves off of second chance shots. Also, they give the other team too many second chances... No offense to Al Horford or Zaza, but Howard is leagues ahead as far as being a powerful rebounder AND BLOCKER... If he was with the Hawks, he would guarantee the Hawks a LOT more 2nd chances and their opponents a LOT less 2nd chances. That would turn into a LOT more wins, especially in close games. It would also free up coverage of Josh Smith, Bibby and Johnson. Being that the Hawks are GREAT at ball movement, they would easily get the ball inside to Howard freeing up the shot for the other guys, and giving Howard the easy option of scoring inside or assisting by dishing it back out. And even if the shot is missed, he'll be there to also pick up the rebound and give the Hawks that much needed 2nd chance... There can be no doubt about it. If Dwight Howard becomes an Atlanta Hawk, the Hawks will be Finals bound!!! He is the missing link in Atlanta. He should come home...
I know Orlando won't let him go that easy, but it would be worth it for Atlanta to give up some draft picks, money and a player or two for him. Personally, I'd try my best not to give up Horford for him. It would be great to have both, but if Horford wouldn't want to move to Power Forward, and sometimes fill in Center when Howard's benched, then that's on Horford.
Just imagine the starting Five:
PG-Mike Bibby
SG-Joe Johnson
SF-Josh Smith (yes, move him to Small Forward to keep him starting)
PF-Al Horford (Same as with J. Smith)
C-Dwight Howard
I'd trade Zaza and M. Williams plus a draft pick to Orlando for him...
That team would be unstoppable!!! The only team in the East that would be able to mess with that would be the Cavs, and that would still be a toss up.
Whose with me? Who's heard of this rumor???
Ask around, and lets find out if this rumor is true or not. Ask ESPN, ask Orlando Magic, ask Atlanta Hawks, ask Dwight Howard himself if possible, but let's get to the bottom of this, cause if it's at all possible, then it needs to be a reality...
